If you are having a procedure, you will be sent written confirmation about your operation booking, including the place, date and approximate time. Before a general anaesthetic, you will need to remain 'Nil by mouth' (nothing to eat or drink) for six hours prior to the operation. Half-day operation lists generally start at 8.30am or 1.30pm, so if your operation is scheduled for a 'morning list' you will need to starve from 2am, or for an afternoon operation you will need to starve from 7.30am. If you are diabetic, please tell your surgeon or his PA.
You should generally turn up at the hospital at least 1hour before the start of the operating list, as there is a fair amount of paperwork to be filled by the nurses and doctors alike. Please remember to bring any relevant Xrays or scans, whether in film or disc format. Before your operation you will be seen in your room by your anaesthetist and surgeon, and any further questions can be answered then.
